Authorities shut down another golf course

A golf course in Chedun Town in Songjiang District was shut down on Tuesday, the third one to close in the city recently.

Nearly half the grass at the West Shanghai Golf Country Club has been removed and a bulldozer could be seen on the course yesterday morning.

According to Chedun Town government, the golf course was slated for closure by the city government as part of a national crackdown and the land will be converted to farmland.

Construction of golf courses has been prohibited in China since 2004 for environmental reasons. Last year 66 golf courses built in contravention of rules designed to protect arable land and save water were closed.

The move is believed to be part of the country’s anti-corruption drive.

The nine-hole course, which covers an area of about 40 hectares, was established about 20 years ago. It had 4,000 members and employed 39 people, according to its staff. Golfers were surprised by the abrupt closure.

“We had a WeChat group of golf lovers, and other members spread word of the closure,” a member surnamed Zhang told Shanghai Daily at the course.

Another member, Han Zaiwang, who has three club memberships, said he went to the course on Monday to find workers closing it down.

“The company told us they will provide an alternative by the end of June,” Han said.

Some employees were not advised of the closure either.

“Last Sunday, some of us were told not to go to work in the morning, and bulldozers arrived the next morning,” caddy Zhang Yujian told Shanghai Daily.

A local government official, who declined to be identified, said there had not been sufficient time to inform everyone, but an effort was being made to deal with inquiries from members.

Meanwhile, another course, Shanghai Orient Golf, will be closed and converted to farmland by the end of the month, according to the official.
