Ultrasound therapy proves its worth

A domestically developed novel ultrasound therapy has proved itself as a good alternative to surgery, doctors said yesterday.

The therapy is now widely used for treating gynecological diseases and cancer.

The high intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU technology, uses focused ultrasound to generate heat to remove or destroy sick and cancerous tissues. The heat can shut off blood supply to such tissues, which stop growing and shrink.

The treatment leaves no scars. For patients, the experience is akin to receiving acupuncture and heat therapy.

“The technology shows good results in uterine fibroids treatment and with other solid cancers, which can be seen through ultrasound,” said Dr Jiang Lixin from the Shanghai No.6 People’s Hospital department of ultrasonic medicine.

“Uterine fibroid treatment is a major task for HIFU in our department.,” Jiang said.

“As a non-invasive therapy, it is welcomed by women who want to get pregnant and don’t want to have scars on their bodies. It is a good solution for those with small uterine fibroids.”

HIFU is also found to be effective in the treatment for patients with cancer that is in the terminal stage and those cancers not easily treated by surgery like pancreatic cancer, medical experts told the cancer treatment forum in Shanghai over the weekend.

“We found promising results from pancreatic cancer patients and patients with their cancer spreading to the liver through HIFU,” said Dr Meng Zhiqiang, director of minimally invasive therapy center at Shanghai Cancer Center.
