Study into birth defects
A government-funded research program to study the causes of birth defects, an increasing problem for China, was launched yesterday in Shanghai.
The program will run for five years, during which time scientists hope to identify up to 10 teratogenic (causing malformation of the fetus or embryo) substances, said the chief scientist Huang Guoying, who is also director of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.
China will invest a total of 30 million yuan (US$4.5 million) into the program. The country is experiencing a high rate of birth defects.
