Scheme provides free vision screening

HELPING residents to see better is the aim of a new health initiative, said officials yesterday.
The city is offering free vision screening for 300,000 people and rehabilitation for 30,000 people with eye problems over the next three years.
Experts from Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, the program coordinator, said about 10 percent of local people suffer from vision disorders and a treatment network will be established to help them.
“About 80 percent of information is obtained through vision, so poor vision can greatly impact on a person’s health and quality of life,” said Dr Sun Xinghuai. “Vision problems for children can influence their perceptual development.”
There are over 12.33 million people with vision disabilities in China.
Cataracts are the most prevalent vision problem affecting the elderly and congenital eye disease is the major cause of childhood vision problems, experts said.
“We want to explore and set up a vision disorder detection, intervention and management system with regular and proper guidelines for citywide and nationwide promotion to benefit more patients,” Sun said.
