Red Cross relief for quake-hit

THE Shanghai branch of Chinese Society of Red Cross yesterday announced that it had donated 300,000 yuan (US$48,387), 2,000 quilts and 2,000 family rescue kits to earthquake-hit Shigatse in Tibet Autonomous Region.

The goods were sent by train which departed for Tibet from Shanghai yesterday.

The emergency rescue money was also remitted yesterday, Red Cross officials said.

The Shigatse area suffered a 5.9-magnitude quake on April 25. The Tibetan government said at 9:30am on Sunday morning that 17 people were killed and four people missing. About 55 people were injured and some 200,000 people suffered in the quake.

Debris and landslides blocked traffic in the city.

The national government and Chinese Society of Red Cross were quick to respond to the crisis that also devastated neighboring Nepal.
