Hospitals struggle with flu cases

WITH the mercury dropping to single digits, the number of flu cases in the city has surged with patients at some hospitals forced to queue up for hours before receiving any treatment.
On Saturday, a widely circulated notice online, purportedly released by Xinhua Hospital, urged people to be patient as the waiting time to receive treatment was about six hours. Children running fever were told to take anti-inflammatory drug Motrin.
A woman, who arrived at the hospital at 11:30pm on Saturday, waited four hours before heading to another hospital.
A man waited for six hours last week with 700 patients before him. It was 4am by the time the doctors could attend to his daughter.
The Shanghai Children’s Medical Center said the number of outpatients and emergency patients it receives daily surpassed a record 6,000. The Children’s Hospital of Fudan University received over 9,000 patients daily.
“We have a 24-hour registration service and it is common for night shift doctors to leave the hospital at 2am these days ... sometimes even at 4am,” said Lu Zhong, director of the emergency treatment department with the Children’s Hospital of Fudan.
Lu said the hospital has 15 doctors working on night shift.
The Children’s Hospital of Shanghai received more than 8,000 patients a day for the last two weeks.
“There is a surge after 7pm because parents have to work at day time. Some patients who arrived in the day were still waiting to be attended at night,” said Li Jinkang, director of the hospital’s emergency treatment department.
Many doctors who start work at 8am usually stay back till 8pm.
