From a radio to just a chat, wishes from needy, lonely seniors are targets of district charity program

A charity program collecting seniors' hopes and looking for white collar workers who are willing to help accomplish them has been launched in Changning District, and the project is expected to roll into other residential complexes in Jing'an and Xuhui districts, authorities announced today.

The program targets seniors who have financial difficulties or live alone. After seniors' hopes are collected by neighborhood committee officials, they will be made online, and white collar workers can apply to complete the hope via an online platform.

In the start-up of the program, the hopes of 20 seniors in Jiangsu Road residential communities were collected, and their hopes ranged from a radio to only a chat as they felt lonely.

Within an hour, all of these hopes were collected by white-collar workers.

The program was initiated by senior care workers of Shanghai Yijia Elderly Development Center, a senior care service provider which operates the city’s first daycare centers for seniors with physical disabilities and dementia. It also participates in the establishment of the platform.

Changning has a serious aging population which is around four seniors per 10 residents with Shanghai permanent residency, and such project raises youngsters' awareness on senior care, said officials with the Changning Civil Affairs Bureau.
