Experts say allergy high in children

THE incidence of allergic asthma among children in Shanghai is 7.57 percent, while about 5 percent of children in the city are allergic to certain types of food, medical experts said ahead of the World Allergy Day today.
About 60 percent of children below two years of age have eczema. Infants with a single symptom tend to develop multi-allergy symptoms with age. About 30 to 40 percent of infants with eczema can be allergic to milk later in their lives.
“Most common food allergy among children are eggs and milk, while adults are likely to be allergic to some kinds of food, including seafood, nuts and food additives,” said Dr Dai Jun, director of dermatological department at the Shanghai Ren’ai Hospital.
“We receive four to five allergy patients every day and the most common allergens among adult patients are hairy crab, mango, milk and lamb.”
He said China should order food manufacturers to name the ingredients used in the products that can trigger allergy.
Allergy is a global disease. The World Health Organization has included it in the list of key diseases that needs intensive research.
Most people, however, are simply unaware of it.
“Allergy among children should be treated in time or it can impact their development,” said Dr Chen Tongxin from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
From this month, the center has launched a comprehensive allergy out-patient service, offering treatment for respiratory tract allergy, food allergy, eczema, hive, medicine-induced allergy and insect sting allergy. The outpatient service will target nutrition disorder and repeated respiratory infection due to allergy, multi-organ allergy and repeated allergy.
