Child with broken arm to pay for mom’s sins

A DOCTOR has refused to provide follow-up treatment to a 5-year-old girl with a broken arm until the child’s mother apologizes for allegedly assaulting a colleague, Minhang District police said yesterday.

The 35-year-old mother, surnamed Zhang, is accused of scratching the face of a doctor working in the emergency department at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.

Dr Ma Ruixue, head of orthopedics at the hospital, said on WeChat yesterday that Zhang arrived at the hospital with her daughter about 5pm on Wednesday. Instead of going to registration, she went straight into the orthopedics clinic and asked the doctor there to treat her daughter immediately.

The unnamed doctor was treating another child at the time and told Zhang to wait her turn. Angered by the response, the mother then “scratched the doctor’s face,” Ma said, though she didn’t witness the assault.

The hospital called police, who arrived at 5:30pm.

Zhang’s daughter was later treated by a replacement doctor, but Ma said she will not be allowed any follow up treatment until Zhang apologizes.

She did not say why she felt it necessary to deprive the child of medical care as a result of the actions of her mother.

“My department refuses to give further treatment to the girl until the dispute is resolved,” Ma said.
