Air quality to improve, rains to return

THE heavy pollution that shrouded the city yesterday will continue to ease today, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.

The rain showers that hit the city on Wednesday night were mostly to blame for yesterday’s bad air as they increased humidity, which in turn inhibited the natural dispersal of pollutants, the center said.

The air quality index began rising about 2am yesterday and by 6am had reached 262. The prevailing smog was worsened by vehicle emissions caused by the morning rush hour.

The situation improved slightly in the afternoon, as the AQI dipped below 200, or moderately polluted.

The main pollutant was PM2.5 particles, the density of which surpassed 150 micrograms per cubic meter in the Pudong New Area and Yangpu, Huangpu, Hongkou and Xuhui districts.

The AQI should be below 100 this morning, though skies are likely to remain cloudy. Rain is forecast for tomorrow and Sunday, with the high temperature likely to be between 14 and 19 degrees Celsius.
