Undersea cables to be protected
THE Shanghai Water Authority has launched a joint campaign along with local police to protect the optical cables buried under the river and in seabed.
The authority yesterday dispatched a team of over 50 officers with ships, speed boats, choppers to patrol the Yangtze River mouth and East Sea near Chongming Island.
The fishermen’s nets and iron anchors constantly pose a threat to the cables. There are some gas and oil pipelines also in the area. About 90 percent of damage were caused by fishermen last year, Wu Mingzhen, China Telecom’s deputy director of the operation department, said.
The fishing boats will be asked to leave the restricted area where the cables are located, said Shen Yiyun, deputy director of the water authority. Over 80 percent of cables for telecommunication and Internet are buried in the area. They connect China with over 200 countries and regions.
