Clean air and icy temperatures
FREEZING weather is forecast for today, with temperatures down to minus 4 degrees Celsius in outlying areas.
This is due to the influence of a strong cold front from the north, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday.
The front brought cold winds that dispersed pollution, leading to a clear day yesterday. At 8pm last night, the city Air Quality Index stood at 34 — “excellent.”
Today, air quality should only be marginally worse, with the AQI “good” at around 60 for much of the day.
However, it will deteriorate as the cold front weakens tomorrow and pollutants are not dispersed.
Temperatures will fall as low as 1 degree below zero in downtown areas early this morning, with thin coatings of ice, the bureau said.
In suburban areas, the low could reach minus 3 to 4 degrees. It will be sunny day, with temperatures reaching around 5 degrees, said forecasters.
From tomorrow, the temperature will start climbing as the cold front weakens, the bureau said.
While it will still be freezing overnight, the high should reach 10 degrees tomorrow, when there will be sunny spells and cloud.
Wednesday should be cloudy, with temperatures up 4 degrees on the previous day. On Thursday, sunny spells are forecast, with similar temperatures to Wednesday.
Friday will be cloudy, with the low around 6 degrees and the high again around 14 degrees.
