Tickets on sale for Xintiandi countdown

TICKETS for this year’s New Year countdown at Taiping Lake Park in the Xintiandi area are available now, but only to those with fat wallets.

Up to 4,800 people will be allowed to attend the December 31 show, but first they must spend 1,688 yuan (US$260) — on a single day and before December 30 — at one of Xintiandi’s shopping malls, the district tourist administration told a press conference yesterday.

The receipts can then be exchanged for a pair of tickets.

Anyone who doesn’t want to bear the cost of admission can stay at home and celebrate the dawn of the new year on television, organizers said, adding that barriers will be erected all around the site to keep out would-be gate-crashers.

Sun Zhongming, director of the tourism authority advised people to leave their cars at home and travel to the event on public transport.

A section of Huangpi Road S, close to the park, will be closed on the night, he said.

The evening starts at 8:30pm and finishes at 0:15am.

The night will include performances by singers Hacken Lee, A-Lin and the dance troupe X-treme Future Couture.

Those who can’t afford to go can listen to others having fun via Dragon TV, FM 103.7 Love Radio, video streaming sites Youku and iQiyi, and audio platform ximalaya.com.

There will be no countdown at the Bund this year.
