Technology that makes books more exciting

WHEN reading a book about dinosaurs, why not have a dinosaur to hand?

The annual Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair launched yesterday shows how this can be done. And interactive fun is the name of the game.

The books come with a QR code that can be scanned to see images of what you are reading about. The augmented reality applications enable readers to use their iPad or mobile phone to make images move according to one’s movements.

A series of introductory science books, including iSolar System and Jurassic World, imported from Carlton Books by CITIC Press Group, are among the most popular books at the three-day book fair.

“My son would love such books, he is keen on scanning things with mobile phone,” a visitor, surnamed Zhang, said.

“Even I feel attracted by the books,” said Zhang, whose son is aged 9.

As well as looking at the technology-powered books, visitors can also enjoy augmented reality videos at the book fair.

Another book featured is a collection of ancient Chinese poems, equipped with some special technology. Under the “bedtime mode,” the poems can be read in a softer voice. The intention is to make it easier for children to nod off to sleep, as well as being immersed into traditional culture.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of renowned Dutch illustrator Fiep Westendorp, a special exhibition on her works is being presented at the book fair.

As part of the book fair, 2016 Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Awards was held on Thursday in Baoshan District.

Chinese illustrator Zhu Chengliang was named Best Author of the Year. More than a dozen writers and illustrators were also honored at the awards.

The book fair, which features more than 60,000 books from around the world, is held at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.
