Monet exhibit to open in city on March 8

A show with 40 paintings by French Impressionist master Claude Monet (1840-1926), billed as the first exhibit of the artist’s works in China’s mainland, will kick off at Shanghai K11 Art Mall on March 8.

The paintings are on loan from the Musee Marmottan Monet in Paris and include the iconic “Water Lily” and “Wisteria,” plus 12 paintings of other Impressionist masters such as Renoir.

Admission is 100 yuan (US$16.24) per person. The event is being held through June 15.

The event is one in a series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations, and is co-organized by Tix Media and the K11 Art Foundation.

It is rare for an exhibition of such prominent works to be held inside a shopping mall such as this one on Huaihai Road M. Usually a government-subsidized museum is on the top of the priority list for organizers.

“We have our reasons as a private company,” said Xie Dingwei, director at Tix Media, “If we choose the government-aided art museum, then we can’t charge admission, as all the museums should open free to the public.

“But the expense of the first phase of this project already exceeds 10 million yuan. How could we make ends meet? Secondly, there is not a qualified art museum downtown. Thus the K11 Art Space, covering 2,000 square meters on Huaihai Road M, is a perfect venue for the exhibition. Thanks to the K11 Art Foundation for providing free space for the show.”
