Maritime Day drama staged

A drama featuring music, dance and poetry was staged on Wednesday to celebrate China Maritime Day on July 11.

Wednesday’s events were part of the China Maritime Museum’s Navigation Festival that will run until Tuesday —  two days ahead of the 13th China Maritime Day. It was established in 2005 to commemorate the nautical hero Zheng He (1371-1433) who crossed the Indian Ocean.

Wednesday’s drama started with ballet dancers representing waves. Children recited China’s first navigation poem Recitals of Whales, and a cellist played folk and classical songs. Another performer stood on a replica of an ancient ship and recited Pablo Neruda’s Ode to the Sea.

The drama was written by the social organization Oriental Danology Institute. According to the co-founder Zhou Lei, it is aimed at inspiring children’s curiosity and to encourage them to explore the sea.

Lectures, interactive activities and sailing are being offered during the festival.
