Map tells story of special era

A cultural map of 30 historic sites in Jing’an District’s Jiangning Road Community was unveiled yesterday.

The sites, which were picked by local residents for having treasured memories and legendary stories, include protected buildings, former residences of celebrities, and sites of factories.

Paintings of 18 of the sites are attached alongside the map, all of them drawn by residents.

“An old building is living history and memory of an era,” said Zhang Jun, Party secretary of the community, which is located where there used to be an international settlement.

The location is dotted with garden villas, such as Pacific Garden, and red-brick townhouses built in the early 1920s. The Party’s footprints are evident, such as with the former residence of Nie Er, who composed China’s national anthem.

So are former factories of a renowned industrial era, like the Shanghai No.4 cotton factory.

Today, a residential complex stands where the factory stood. Only the magnolia trees survive.
