First-time filmmakers win top award at festival

THE Indian entry “Thithi” was named Best Film last night at the Asian New Talent Award ceremony of the 2016 Shanghai International Film and TV Festival at Daning Theater.
Directed by Raam Pratap Reddy, “Thithi” is a comedy drama telling the story of three generations of men reacting to the death of their cantankerous patriarch Century Gowda, the oldest of their clan, in a remote village in Karnataka in South India.
Three storylines intertwine before converging at Gowda’s “thithi” — funeral ceremony — 11 days after his death.
All the actors in the film are farmers rather than professional performers.
“I’m stunned. This film was actually made over three and half years with a bunch of first-time filmmakers. All of us are first-time filmmakers … we went to the village and tried to make the film as honest and true as possible,” said Reddy.
Reddy and Eregowda also won the Best Scriptwriter award for “Thithi.”
Meanwhile, Taiwanese director Chen Yujie picked up the Best Director award for “Lost Daughter.”
“This film expresses the emotional relationship between the people in the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. I’d like to thank Shanghai International Film Festival for the love they showed to this film,” Chen said.
Chinese actor Qin Yong won the Best Actor award for his performance in “Nirvana,” and Chinese actress Sun Yi won the Best Actress award for “Pleasure. Love.”
The Best Cinematographer award went to Puttinpong Aroonpheng for the Thai film “The Island Funeral.”
