City's first locally-born panda cub gets her name at two months old

THE first giant panda born in Shanghai is named "Hua Sheng" which bears the auspicious meaning of healthy growth and fertility and she will say "hello" to visitors starting from the Mid-Autumn Festival, operator of the Shanghai Wildlife Park announced today.

"Hua Sheng" weighs 3,280 grams and is 52 centimeters long. She’s also a granddaughter of the world’s oldest captive giant panda.

She is two month old today and the park held a celebration for her. The name is decided by a public vote.

Among the 20 potential names suggested, "Hua Sheng" won overwhelmingly 14,800 votes, the park operator said.

"The name bears people's  good wishes that 'Hua Sheng' will be as beautiful and lovely as flower (which is pronounced as Hua in Chinese), and give birth to more giant pandas, thus expanding the giant panda population in Shanghai," said Cao Liang, deputy general manager of the park.

In Chinese, flowering also has the connotation of bringing fertility, and Sheng means giving birth.

Hua Sheng is in good health and she has already learnt to roll over, said the park.

The park was established as a giant panda reserve by the State Forestry Administration of China in March. There are also reserves in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Guo Guo, mother of Hua Sheng, and another panda were transported to the park from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong in Sichuan Province.
The mother of Guo Guo is 38-year-old Jia Jia, who lives in Ocean Park Hong Kong and is the world’s oldest captive giant panda.
