City puts best foot forward for the holiday

ALL landscape lights will be turned on in downtown areas, along the Huangpu River, the former World Expo site and some elevated roads from 6pm to 11pm between tomorrow and October 6 to celebrate the National Day holiday.

Some skyscrapers, outdoor advertisement boards, the Yan’an and Humin elevated roads, the Inner Ring Road and the Yangpu, Nanpu and Lupu bridges will be lit up for the holiday, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.

Flowers have been planted at People’s Square, the Bund, the Jing’an Temple, Lujiazui, Xujiahui and the Zhongshan Park to spruce up the city for the golden week. Flowers have also been planted along 10 major streets including Huaihai, Nanjing and Xujiahui roads.

Attractions across the city will stage more than 60 events from concerts and exhibitions to folk activities and festivals, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said.

Fengjing Water Town in Jinshan District will stage Chinese operas while a kite flying event will be held at the beach area in Fengxian District. Langxia Town in Jinshan will host barbecue parties while the Dongping Forest Park in Chongming will hold bonfire bashes each night.

A butterfly exhibition featuring about 30 species will take place at the Shanghai Zoo during the holiday. Visitors will be able to make butterfly bookmarks during the event. An exhibition of Chinese animal paintings and flower arrangement works will also be held at the zoo through the holiday.

The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium has introduced an underwater robot to greet visitors during the holiday. Underwater robots are mainly used on ocean exploration missions. It’s the first time an aquarium in China will display an underwater robot. Electronic screens will show visitors what the robot sees and it will also interact with divers.

Meanwhile, Chocolate Happyland is hosting Italian chocolate and wedding culture exhibitions from October 1 to October 5. There will be lectures about the history of chocolate and how it’s made along with a tasting event. A children’s painting competition will also be held.

The Shanghai Botanical Garden will host a flower exhibition.
