China-US sequel to ‘Crouching Tiger’

THE sequel to Oscar-winning martial arts epic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” will be a Chinese-American production, it was announced at the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival yesterday.
Co-produced by Pegasus Media, the China Film Group Corp and the Weinstein Co, “The Green Destiny” will be shot this year in New Zealand and China, and scheduled for release in 2016.
“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” directed by Ang Lee and released in 2000, grossed US$213.5 million and won four Oscars, including Best Foreign Language Film.
Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who starred in the first installment, returns for the sequel, while Hong Kong actor Nicholas Tse has also been confirmed.
Spectacular action is promised as “The Green Destiny” will center on the battles for a precious ancient Chinese sword.
According to Sun Jianjun, president of Pegasus Media, special effects, makeup and costumes professionals from the “The Lord of the Rings” movies will be invited to work on the production.
“It will retain the Oriental flavor of the first installment while presenting more stunning visual effects with the help of foreign expertise,” said Sun.
Sun added that Pegasus is also co-producing movies with well-known companies in South Korea and France.
Meanwhile, a Chinese release date of July 31 was announced yesterday for 3D animated movie “Dragon Nest,” co-produced by Hollywood producer Bill Borden and Mili Pictures.
And the Shanghai Film Group Corp said shooting will begin soon on “The Cursed Piano,” co-produced by Hollywood filmmaker Mike Medavoy and with Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson at the helm.
It tells the story of a Jewish musician who comes to Shanghai to escape the Holocaust.
