UK minister visits schools in town

THE United Kingdom wants to expand its educational cooperation and exchange programs into areas such as the creative arts, from the current popular math teaching program, UK education minister Justine Greening said yesterday.

Greening is in town leading a delegation to the fourth round of the UK China High Level People-to-People Dialogue, which begins in the city today.

The principal of the Yangjing-Juyuan Experimental School in Pudong New Area, Wang Huanwen, also told Greening the school wanted to expand exchange activities from math.

He sees opportunities in areas such as drama, debating, creative arts and further into STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The minister also visited Donghua University, famous for its textile and fashion education, which is cooperating with the University of Edinburgh in fashion design and interior design.

The minister unveiled the Donghua-Edinburgh Center for Creative Industries which will bring the two institutions together to work in education, research and industry and help build Shanghai into a fashion capital.

“It’s a really good indication of the good relationship between our two countries and how education is one of the ways we have our people-to-people exchanges,” the education minister told reporters.

Hundreds of teachers have been exchanged between the two countries and Greening said she wanted to see more.

“China is also interested in seeing how we can develop this relationship further in terms of creative arts and we think that’s something that we can also consider as well,” she said.

“In London, we have lots of creative arts and I’m sure that’s something we can share more fully.”

“The UK and China share many joint priorities in the field of education,” Greening said.

“I am looking forward to the prospect of collaboration to raise standards, showcase British qualification and ensure all pupils have the skills employers need.”
