Shanghai willing to help UK with math education via teacher exchange
SHANGHAI is willing to work with the United Kingdom's Department for Education in a program to send local teachers to teach at British schools, an educational official said today.
However, the official declined to reveal more details of the program as an agreement of the exchange program is still under discussion.
According to the UK's Department for Education, up to 60 English-speaking teachers from Chinese cities such as Shanghai will work in 30 math hubs in England starting in September to demonstrate their teaching methods to local staff.
Meanwhile, two leading English math teachers from each of the 30 schools will work in schools in China, such as the high-performing math jurisdiction of Shanghai, for at least a month, to learn the teaching approaches. The teachers will then put into practice in England what they have learned and spread the information to their peers.
The UK Government is prioritizing math as it sees the importance of good grades in the subject to young people competing for good jobs in a global labor market and to the economy more generally.
In the 2012 PISA tests, Shanghai's 15-year-old students ranked first in math while England ranked 26th.
