Search for 2,000 new teachers

A JOBS fair will be held on March 19 for schools to recruit teachers, the Shanghai Educational Human Resource Exchange and Service Center, organizer of the event, said yesterday.

About 400 schools will offer about 2,000 vacancies in the fair at the Shanghai Mart on 2299 Yan’an Road W.

The main needs are for teachers of Chinese, math and English, the three main courses in schools. The demand for music, sport and arts teachers is also high as educational authorities encourage schools to promote such subjects to promote a broader education that is not just test-oriented.

Organizers say some district governments have introduced policies to improve education.

Minhang District officials say the district plans to recruit 781 teachers by July and some of the district’s schools will attend the fair.

The district government will provide housing exclusively for teachers.

Those who are recruited can apply for apartments if their families do not have a residence in Shanghai.

Downtown Hongkou district said its biggest challenge is to break through the hukou, or residency requirements, for people from outside Shanghai.

Previously, applicants had to have a local hukou for jobs in downtown public schools.

But now, those who have passed assessments and have local apartments can be employed even if they don’t have a hukou.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s or higher degree and certificates for foreign languages, physical and psychological health.

The fair will run from 9am to 2pm, but an online version will start at the website of www.shehr.cn on March 20 and run until May 30.
