Holiday camp for 50,000

LOVE Summer Care Camp, the popular government program that takes care of primary school pupils whose parents cannot look after them during the summer vacation, said yesterday it will enroll 50,000 children this year, 10,000 more than last year.

While the two “semesters” will be prolonged from three to four weeks, the charge will rise to 800 yuan (US$118) from the current 600 yuan. Enrollment for the 403 locations where the program is to be held will start on Monday, with the first semester starting from July 3 and the second from July 31.

This year, 24 non-governmental organizations will provide classes covering environmental protection and physical and psychological health as well as various cultural activities.

For the first time, some government institutions, universities and companies will offer venues for the classes to be held, such as Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Jiading District and Shanghai University of TCM.

Also parents will be able to check out live streaming of the classes that their children attend via the Internet, the organizers announced.

The summer camp will continue to provide volunteering opportunities for more than 10,000 university and high school students this year.
