58% of recent college graduates have been hired

Nearly 72 percent of local college students who graduated this year had signed an employment contract, been admitted to graduate studies or decided to go abroad by the end of June, the Shanghai Education Commission said today.

That was up nearly 30 percent from mid-May, and about the same compared to last year.

This year 175,600 students graduated from college in Shanghai, including 37,900 postgraduates and 89,100 undergraduates. The remainder graduated from vocational colleges.

About 58 percent of the graduates had been hired, 8 percent were admitted to graduate studies and 5 percent said they plan to go abroad.

Of employed students, postgraduates had the highest employment rate at about 81 percent, compared to 68 percent for undergraduates and 73 for vocational college graduates.

Due to fierce competition on the job market, more students said they plan further studies after graduation. The number of postgraduate students in Shanghai increased 2 percent annually in the past three years.
