2 students drown in bid to save friend

TWO teenage students drowned in a river in Jiading District yesterday afternoon trying save a schoolmate who had apparently jumped into the water to commit suicide.
The victims, both around 13, a boy surnamed Liu and a girl surnamed Han, were students at Waigang Middle School.
The girl reported to have tried to take her own life, surnamed Peng, survived.
This tragic incident occurred just hours after local education authorities warned children not to risk their lives in the water trying to be good Samaritans.
Peng was walking with five classmates on a bridge at about 2:15pm when she jumped into the river, according to Jiading District Education Bureau.
Three of her schoolmates — Liu, Han and another girl surnamed Wang — jumped into the river to try to save Peng. The others called police for help.
The bureau said Peng was rescued by a community security guard and a deliveryman, while Liu and Han were missing.
Wang managed to get back to the bank herself.
Han’s and Liu’s bodies were later retrieved by police and firefighters. The bureau said neither were good swimmers.
The students had a day off school as they had finished their final exam on Wednesday.
It was suspected Peng tried to commit suicide because she feared she didn’t do well in the exam, xinmin.cn reported.
Top killer
Hours before the tragedy, the Shanghai Education Commission warned students not to dive into water to save people if they are not good swimmers, as their own lives may be at risk.
This was part of safety alerts issued ahead of the summer vacation which begin on July 1.
Drowning remained a top killer of children in accidents in Shanghai and China as a whole, said Zhu Jian, director of the city education commission’s youth protection department.
Last year, 60 children in Shanghai died in accidents, of whom 21 were drowned, said the youth protection department.
The number may be considerably higher as it excludes preschoolers and non-local children visiting Shanghai during the summer holiday.
