Yellow alert issued as Shanghai struggles with poor air quality

Schools in Shanghai have canceled all outdoor activities and construction sites have been told to stop work to tackle severe air pollution.
This is the fourth time this month the city has been forced to enforce emergency measures to deal with the pollution.
A yellow-level warning, the third of the four-tier pollution warning system, was issued at 6am. The air quality index (AQI) climbed to 279 at 11am, which stayed at 264 at 6am.
The city's kindergartens, primary and secondary schools were ordered to cancel outdoor activities by Shanghai Education Commission this morning. And students who were late or absent will not be punished.
Children, elderly people and those suffering from heart and lung diseases and other vulnerable people are being advised to stay indoors, while others are being told to cut down on outdoor activities.
Power plants have been told to switch to green energy for power generation, while industries have been asked to reduce production and pollution.
Construction sites have stopped work to lessen dust and outdoor straw burning is prohibited.
