Workers of Apple’s contract manufacturer jailed for stealing iPhones, accessories worth one million

SIX staffers of a local Apple contract manufacturer and four of its canteen workers were sentenced 8 months to 7 years in jail by a local court today for working together to steal more than 200 iPhones and accessories from the company’s assembly line and sell them outside.

They were accused of theft, embezzlement and concealing illicit gains.

Prosecutors said two workers, surnamed Pei and Shi, at the local subsidiary corporation of Pegatron as one of Apple’s contracted manufacturers, plotted to steal some new products after Apple released its iPhone 6 series in June last year. They first managed to steal five iPhone 6 phones and hid them in a restroom at the factory. The stolen goods were later transferred to vice manager of the factory’s canteen. The canteen manager, surnamed Li, then stowed the phones among other facilities at the canteen and finally took them out.

They used the same way to steal more iPhone products with more staffers involved in their scam. Between June, 2014 and January, 2015, they had stolen 227 iPhones, 360 motherboards and 58 Apple batteries and had them sold outside the factory. The phones have a market value of worth more than 1 million yuan.
