Women’s prison invites mothers to see their daughters

THIRTY mothers were invited to Shanghai’s women's prison to see their daughters on Wednesday, a date with special meaning since it is pronounced like “I love you” in Chinese.

The reunion was part of the prison's program launched last year to encourage changes in inmates by fostering a love for mothers. The program is also designed to open more prison affairs to the public.

Many of the mothers cried when they watched a drama about how much inmates missed their mom and heard their daughters sing in a chorus.

Wang Ting, 29, who was sentenced to 14 years in jail six years ago for an Internet fraud crime involving more than 1 million yuan (US$160,000), saw her mother without a wall of glass between them for the first time last year since being sentenced.

Wang said she had blamed her mother for being too strict, which fostered her rebellion and pushed her to the wrong track of life.

“I believed that she had interfered too much in my life, resulting in my lack of friends and addiction to web games, in which I committed the crime,”she said, “Even after I was jailed I had a rocky relationship with her though she wrote letters to me almost every day.”

But through the prison’s maternal love program, Wang’s mother admitted she pushed her daughter too much in front of prison police and inmates last year. Wang realized how much her mother loved her and how selfish she had been. She said her attitude toward her mother began to soften.

Police officers showed videos of daily life in prison to the mothers and answered their questions about regulations and laws about prison management.
