Truck smashes into Shanghai’s historic steel bridge

A HEAVYWEIGHT truck hit the steel structure of Waibaidu Bridge in downtown Shanghai around 5am on Tuesday, causing no injuries.

The driver’s cabin of the truck was smashed and the driver had minor scratches in the accident.

The sidewalk railing of the century-old bridge was snapped off and the a section of the steel structure slightly skewed from the incident.

The truck was towed away and traffic has returned to normal. Further investigation is underway.

The road management authority said engineers will assess the safety of the bridge this morning and work out a preliminary repair plan.

The steel bridge built in 1907 is a protected historic structure in Shanghai. It was most recently renovated in 2008.

Trucks are banned from driving through the Waibaidu Bridge as it is in the Bund scenic area, police said.
