Treats for Bugs Bunny, White Socks

Giant pandas He Feng and Xing Guang at the Shanghai Zoo in Changning District welcomed their favorite season with fresh bamboo shoots delivered yesterday from Anji County, Zhejiang Province.

Bamboo shoot season usually starts around the Qingming Festival, which falls on April 4 this year, and is expected to last until the end of May, according to the zoo.

“The duo will be fed without limit on fresh bamboo shoots during this season, and this is their first bamboo shoot season in Shanghai,” said Wu Tong, a zoo office staff member.

“At other times of the year, they are fed with bamboo leaves when there are no fresh shoots.”

The duo, two male giant pandas both born in 2016, arrived at the zoo in June last year from Chengdu in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Xing Guang, born on June 23, is nicknamed Bugs Bunny because of his signature front teeth.

He Feng, born on August 9, is nicknamed White Socks because he has white hair on his feet.

During the closure of the zoo due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, both gained weight to more than 100 kilograms, the zoo said.

Anji is known for its specialty bamboo shoots.

Shanghai Zoo reopened on March 13. Tourists can see the pandas if visiting the park.
