Traffic capacity halved at city airports as hundreds of flights cancelled, delayed in downpour

OVER 200 flights were cancelled and another 200 were delayed at Shanghai’s two airports due to heavy downpour hit the city in the morning.
The air traffic controller issued a second level orange alert for flight delays around 10am and predicated the Pudong and Hongqiao airports’ air traffic capacity will be cut by half between 9:30am and 12pm.
The thunder and rain storms greatly impacted the city’s air traffic and made flights be hardly able to take off or land, the air traffic controller under the East China Civil Aviation Administration of China said on its air traffic information platform.
The controller issued a yellow alert in the early morning and predicted the flying capacity to be cut by 30 percent with the rainstorm but upgraded to orange level soon.
Hongqiao International Airport has cancelled some 120 flights with another 120 were delayed.
Pudong that was also hit by massive delays cancelled about 100 flights with 140 being delayed.
Both airports are being affected with both the shower as well as thunder storms between 8am and noon that affected the flights, according to the airport’s weather forecasters.
The air traffic controller said flight delays won’t be alleviated until 3pm when the air traffic capacity will also be cut by 30 percent.
Strong rainstorm will cause turbulence in the air and may damage the aircraft, while thunder may cause malfunctions to electric facilities, especially communication and navigation equipment to aircraft, the airport authority said.
