Star hurdler Liu Xiang to announce retirement April 7

Chinese star hurdler Liu Xiang is going to announce his retirement through his social media account next week.

Liu’s long-term coach Sun Haiping reportedly told local media insiders on a private occasion this week that the 31-year-old former World and Olympic champion is likely to announce his retirement through his weibo account next Tuesday, Shanghai Daily learned today.

The last time Liu made a public appearance was on March 29 when he showed up at Beijing National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest, for a promotional event for the 2015 IAAF World Championships to be held in the capital city in August.

Liu said earlier he was not going to compete in the championships to be held in Bird’s Nest, the stadium that witnessed his withdraw from the Beijing Olympic Games because of an aggravated Achilles tendon in 2008.

He had since been bothered by this injury, and could not reach his peak form again.
