Shanghai residents live longer; over 1,400 are centenarians
Shanghai now has more than 1,400 centenarians thanks to their healthy lifestyles, a sound medical system and good care from their children. The Shanghai Gerontological Society said the city’s oldest resident is 115 years old.
The city registered 1,407 centenarians at the end of last year and 365 were added to the list in the first half of this year, according to the society. It did not mention how many centenarians died this year, but the current number should be over 1,400.
These centenarians may have different lifestyles but they have something in common, such as being broad-minded, good-tempered, not picky on food, non-smoker, going to bed on time, exercising regularly, and living in harmony with family members, the society said.
Jing'an, Xuhui and Huangpu boast more centenarians per 100,000 people than other districts in Shanghai.
There were 9.8 centenarians per 100,000 people in Shanghai last year, up 1 percent from 2012. A city earns the “longevity city” title if it has seven centenarians for every 100,000 residents.
Shanghai’s oldest resident, Li Suqing, 115, lives with her daughter and son-in-law. She has been one of the “Ten Female Longevity Stars” for seven years.
Xu Renqing, 104, is one of “Ten Male Longevity Stars.” He smiles at anyone who wants to have pictures with him and still buys and sells stocks despite his old age. His children said no matter winning or losing money, he is always happy.
Xu lives alone in a second-floor apartment in Xuhui District because he prefers quietness, his children said. His secret for longevity is to drink a glass of warm water after getting up every morning.
