Shanghai issues this summer’s first red alert for heat

SHANGHAI weather bureau issued this year’s first red alert for heat wave — the highest level in a three-tier system — forecasting highs of 40 degrees or more at 12:22pm today.

Downtown areas, west part of Pudong New Area and north section of Minhang District are expected to see sizzling temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The highest temperature has exceeded 39 degrees Celsius as of 12:14pm.
