Shanghai dialect sitcom to debut on Drama Channel

Shanghai dialect sitcoms have faded out of people's sight for several years now. The genre used to flourish on the radio and TV, often impressing generations of people with humor, sarcasm and distinctive Shanghai culture.

To fill this empty void, a new original Shanghai dialect sitcom titled, "Fun Stories of Old Houses”, will be debuted on the local Drama Channel on July 6.

The sitcom gathers the city's top-notch Shanghai farce artists including Wang Rugang, Mao Mengda and Qian Yi. It will be aired on the evenings of weekdays.

With a setting of old Shanghai houses from the past, the sitcom tells hilarious stories about the lives and emotions of today's Shanghai people.

Some hot trends and social topics are also incorporated into the plot, such as the huge popularity of the reality show, E-commerce and square dance.

The sitcom will also include new characters and stories about modern Shanghainese and foreign expats.

Wang Rugang, known for his comic acting in the classic sitcom “The Black Teahouse" had not starred in a TV sitcom for 15 years.

"I will play a 80-something single man, owner of the old Shanghai house in the sitcom," said the 62-year-old Wang. "I hope that the sitcom with unique cultural value and charm of Shanghai will amuse people. It is also a chance for children to learn Shanghai dialect from the sitcom."

Recently there have been very few Shanghai dialect programs on the radio or TV in terms of the decline of Shanghai dialect.

Children and young teenagers of today have few opportunities to learn and practice Shanghai dialect since Mandarin is required in schools and kindergartens.
