Shanghai comic on drugs, gun rap

SHANGHAI stand-up comedian Zhou Libo has been arrested in Long Island, New York, on charges of illegal possession of drugs and firearms, a local Chinese language newspaper reported yesterday.

Zhou, also a former judge on “China’s Got Talent” and another man were pulled over in their black Mercedes the early hours of Thursday after police saw them talking on their mobiles while the car was driving erratically, the World Journal reported.

Police said they found a .38 caliber pistol and two bags of crack cocaine in the car. The suspects were immediately detained and did not resist arrest.

The pair were charged with illegal possession of controlled substances, weapons and firearms, as well as illegal use of phones while driving. They are due to appear in court last night. Zhou’s representatives have not commented.

Zhou, who is from Shanghai, became famous around a decade ago for his unique style of comedy, which combined Mandarin, Shanghainese and some English phrases. He called it Shanghai style stand-up comedy. From 2010 to 2015, he was the host of the “Mr Zhou Live Show,” which is considered by some to be the first comedy talk show in China.

As well as “China’s Got Talent,” the 49-year-old comedian was also a judge on “Amazing Chinese.” In 2016, Zhou became the first Chinese stand-up comedian to perform at Carnegie Hall. He once joked on air: “I’d rather sell than use drugs.”
