Shanghai Metro to extend operating hours

SEVEN Metro lines will extend night operating hours from this Friday, the city's Metro operator said on Tuesday.

Metro Lines 10 and 16 will extend the operating hours by 25 and 30 minutes through Sunday to Thursday.

Metro Lines 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 will extend the schedule by 70 to 80 minutes on Friday, Saturday nights and the night before major national holidays.

According to the new time table, the affected lines' stations in downtown will open till midnight over weekends, the Metro operator said.

"The average operating hours of the affected lines will reach more than 18 hours," said Shao Weizhong, deputy president of the Metro company.

According to the plan, Metro Line 16 will prolong its operation by half an hour through Sunday to Thursday, with an interval of some 10 minutes during the extended period.

Metro Line 10’s operating hours will be extended through the whole week. From Sunday to Thursday, operating hours of the whole line will extend by 25 minutes; and for Friday, Saturday and nights before major national holidays, the operating hours on the section between Xinjiangwancheng to Hongqiao Railway Station will be extended by another 80 minutes.

The other five lines will only extend operating hours on Friday, Saturday and the night before major holidays compared to their regular timetable on weekdays. Most of the lines’ last trains will depart at about 11:50pm, and the last train is scheduled to arrive at Guanglan Road Station of Metro Line2 at 0:54 am.

Metro Line 2 will extend the operating hours by 70 minutes, except for the eastern section between Guanglan Road and Shanghai Pudong International Airport stations.

Metro lines 1, 7, 8 and 9 will extend the operating hours by 80 minutes. The affected section on Metro Line 7 is between Qihua Road to Huamu Road stations, and on Metro Line 9 is between Sheshan and Middle Yanggao Road stations.

Moreover, a total of 43 bus routes running near the affected Metro stations will extend their operating hours to match the extension of the Metro network. The bus routes’ last bus will depart 15 minutes after the operating hours of related Metro stations, and the interval will be within 25 minutes.

The Metro police said security inspection in the affected stations will also extend along with the operating hours, and more officers will be sent to patrol the stations and trains.

To ensure maintenance work and operation after the big changes to the timetables, the Metro operator said it had launched exercises last week. It added if there are still issues during the real operation, passengers can call 64370000 or leave messages to Shanghai Metro’s official Weibo.
