Revamped Majestic Theatre reopens tonight by staging 'Swan Lake'

THE city’s once most popular historic theatre reopened today after a five-year-long renovation to restore its original look in 1940s.

The Majestic Theatre in Jing’an District will hold the Tchaikosky classic "Swan Lake" from the Russian Imperial Ballet Company tonight as the beginning of a trial operation before its official opening in April.

The theatre operator managed to find dozens of original designing charts from the Shanghai Urban Construction Archives to restore many former details of the theatre, said Qiu Guanlun, the general manager of the theatre.

To restore a terrazzo ground at the entrance which is quite rare now, for instance, the operator invited some old engineers from Pudong’s Chuansha area who took part in the initial construction on the theatre to offer the original ingredients and techniques, he said.

“Many retired employees were invited to take a visit when the renovation was nearly completed and they said it looked the same as that in several decades ago,” Qiu said.

The theatre now has 1,261 seats in the original red color. Air-conditioning outlet has been installed under each seat. Four large screens have been newly installed to reflect the performances on stage.

The theatre now also has cutting edge equipment – the sound system was imported from the United States while other systems were from Portugal.
