Nearly 8% of city pools contain excess urea, bacteria and dirt

Some 8 percent of Shanghai public swimming pools were found having excess levels of bacteria, dirt and urea, according to a survey released today by the city's health authority.
The operators of these swimming pools don't change the water frequently enough while some swimmers take a dip before showering, leading to excess levels of bacteria and dirt, said Zhang Fan, deputy director with the Shanghai Health Supervision Agency.
Urea is removed from the body through urine and sweat.
The agency did random checks at 231 of 483 public pools across the city including those in hotels, schools and gyms. Eighteen failed to meet water quality standards. The pools that failed the checks were fined and told to upgrade facilities, Zhang said.
