Musical about real-life airport stabbing staged in women’s prison

A musical, adapted from a true story in which a Shanghai student studying in Japan stabbed his mother at Pudong International Airport over a financial dispute, was staged at Shanghai Women's Prison yesterday as part of its efforts to educate inmates about maternal love.

The incident happened in April 2013. The young man surnamed Wang was later sentenced to jail for three-and-a-half years. The mother had asked the court to give her son a lighter sentence.

The drama “Mama, Love Me Once Again,” was created by the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts to show selflessness and tolerance toward mothers. The institute was invited to the prison to encourage its inmates, many of whom are mothers or daughters, to work on improving themselves so they can return home as soon as possible.

The prison said this year it has held a series of activities including showing mother-themed movies on Mother's Day and inviting inmates' mothers to see their daughters behind bars on Women's Day.
