Minimally invasive surgery benefits patients with varicose veins

MINIMALLY invasive surgery has become popular in local hospitals to benefit patients with varicose veins, a common complication for the elderly, obese people and those who stand long periods of time at work, doctors said.

Clinically, varicose veins can be classified for six levels and patients with level three or higher should receive intervention by professionals, said Dr Ge Xiangqian from Shanghai Changhang Hospital.

“Many patients are not aware of the surgery, which is called endovenous laser treatment, a minimally invasive ultrasound-guided technology done in a very short time and requires only local anesthesia,” Ge said. “Compared with traditional treatment, the measure can greatly reduce complications and possible side effects like inflammation. It also reduces pain, leaves almost no scar and shortens recovery time.”

Doctors said patients with serious varicose veins should visit medical professionals in time, as it can cause severe complications and even be fatal if resulting in deep venous thrombosis and blocking major blood vessels.
