Metro Line 1 rush hour commute disrupted by balloon

A BALLOON got tangled in the electrical lines of Metro Line 1 on Monday morning, causing speed limit during morning rush hours.

The city’s Metro operator said on its official Weibo at about 6:30am that the section from Hulan Road to Fujin Road stations would introduce speed limit and prolong interval due to the incident. The affected section expanded to Tonghe Xincun to Fujin Road stations an hour later. The operator said that the balloon was removed at about 8am and operation began to return to normal.

The speed limit also caused congestion near stations along the sections.

“I arrived at Gongkang Road station at 7:45am, and waited for an hour before getting on the train,” a resident surnamed Shen told Shanghai Daily.

The operator said the Mylar balloon was tangled on the elevated section between Gongfu Xincun and Baoan Highway.

It added balloons tangled in electricity grid of the Metro network would affect the Metro service and they must be removed in order to resume operation. Mylar balloons, with metallic foil coating, can also cause short out of the network.
