Massive flight delays, cancellations at city airports blamed on foggy, low-cloud weather

OVER 40 flights were cancelled and 130 others delayed at Shanghai's two airports today due to the heavy fog and low-cloud weather.

Massive flight delays began at around 9am at both Pudong and Hongqiao international airports when visibilities dropped to less than a kilometer, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

Hongqiao airport suspended flight takeoff and landing temporarily at around 10am as visibility dropped to only 200 meters. The airport restored operation at around 11am.

China Southern Airlines initially issued an alert for massive flight delays at Hongqiao airport. It flights were delayed by about three hours on average.

Spring Airlines diverted six flights to land at airports in neighboring Hangzhou city. Juneyao Airlines announced to cancel a dozen of its flights at both airports.
