Library boosts large amounts of chemical compounds
OVER 2.2 million types of chemical compounds have been stored at the Chinese National Compound Library located in Zhangjiang of Pudong New Area, which boosts new drug development and research in the China and the world, officials said during the library’s fifth anniversary.
Developed from the 500,000 chemicals donated by Novo Nordisk and 100,000 chemicals from its own, the library has become the biggest in Asia and one of the largest public libraries in the world, said Wang Mingwei, director of the Chinese National Compound Library.
The library is a leading new drug development platform. Last year, the library researchers conducted 2.98 million times of screenings on its stored chemicals, while the library also provided samples, chemical structure and consultation to research institutes and companies home and abroad.
“Many chemicals were found positive candidates for new drug development. Two chemicals studied by our researchers have entered clinical trial,” Wang said. “We also found two new targets for diabetes new drug development.”
Zhang Kezhou from Novo Nordisk (China) Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd said the company is very glad to witness a quick growth of the library and will further focus on diabetes new drug research and development.
