How to survive a stampede
During a stampede, people may die not only because of traumatic trampling injuries but also suffocation brought by pushing crowd pressure. Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
1. When feeling uncomfortable in a crowd, start looking for exits and leave. Many people make that decision too late and find themselves trapped in the crowd.
2. If trapped in the middle of a moving crowd, move in the same direction of the crowd. Don’t push against the crowd, don’t yell or scream to conserve energy.
3. Try to stay on your feet and keep your hands up by your chest like a boxer – it helps to protect your chest.
4. Divert pressure to your side. When pressure is applied to the body in a front to back direction, people won’t be able to breath. Survival rate is higher when the pressure is applied on side, because rib cages protect the ability to breath.
5. Don’t bend to pick up dropped stuff, no matter it’s a shoe, cell phone or wallet. That increases the possibility of pile-up and being trampled.
6. If you fall and cannot get up, keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd. If that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up into the fetal position. Do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.
7. Use sign language to communicate with people around you. If someone extends their hand for help, grab hold to keep them up. If you’re in danger ask people to crowd surf you out.
