Fengxian reveals its ambitious plans for farmland

FENGXIAN District plans to build “dozens of agricultural parks” to turn its traditional farm industry into tourism venues and museums, officials said yesterday.

Eighteen agricultural parks would be built in Jinhui Town, one of the city’s oldest towns where a renowned disciple of Confucius gave lessons to residents some 5,000 years ago, said Wang Jiandong, director of the town.

Once the parks are completed, visitors will be able to lease farmland online and invite local farmers to plant for them.

The owners can monitor progress by remote control and watch the how their land is developed via the Internet.

Green food gardens will produce and sell organic agricultural products online to downtown residents. Some agricultural museums telling the story of the history and culture of Fengxian have also been planned in the parks.

The township government would relocate 38 ancient bridges discovered inside the parks and stone tablets would describe the history of these bridges, said Wang.

A major agricultural park covering 17 square kilometers is planned for Zhuanghang Town in Fengxian. It will become a major tourism attraction of the southern outskirt district for sightseeing and leisure, the district government has said.

The agricultural parks would help local farmers to become richer while creating a place for downtown residents to get close to nature, Zhuang Mudi, the Party secretary of Fengxian, said yesterday.

The parks are part of Fengxian’s ambition to become the city’s first national ecological garden and forests district. The plan also includes dredging rivers, according to the district government.
