Curtain wall glass drops from Shanghai Tower, injuring driver’s foot

A piece of curtain wall glass dropped from the 76th floor of the Shanghai Tower in Lujiazui area this morning and injured a driver on the ground.

The glass dropped on the southeast side of the building when workers with the Shenyang Yuanda Aluminum Industry Engineering Co. Ltd, a supplier of the curtain wall, were replacing the glass that was damaged, the Shanghai Tower said in a statement.

The glass fell at around 10:45am, landed and crashed beside a driver who was just getting off his car on Pudong’s Dongtai Road. Some broken glass scraps jumped onto the foot of the driver, causing injuries. The driver was sent to hospital.

According to photos being posted online, broken glass is scattering beneath a Tesla vehicle. Scraps can also be seen around the road.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation, the building’s operator said.

“We will take further measures to prevent similar accident in the future,” it said in the statement.

The 632-meter building in the Lujiazui financial hub in the Pudong New Area is the world’s second-tallest building — surpassed only by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which soars to 828 meters.

The building has launched a trial opening of its 35-meter-tall five-floor annex which includes restaurants, conference rooms and wedding and banquet halls as well as the underground exhibition hall about the building's details.
