Containers fall off, stranding cruise ships and passengers

THIRTY-SEVEN containers loaded with waste paper scrap fell into the Yangtze River from a ship near Shanghai’s Wusongkou port last night, blocking the waterway and stranding cruise liner passengers today.

The city’s maritime authority has confirmed there are no dangerous goods stored in the containers. They overturned and dropped into the river at 9:57pm yesterday from a cargo ship named Shungang 19, which loaded a total of 129 containers when the accident happened.

Six containers have been salvaged after the rescue center with the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration dispatched 11 salvage ships, six tugboats and 11 patrolling vessels to search, position and salvage the containers from the river, the administration said.

Two survey boats including the Haixun 1668 from the center are scanning the waterway near the Wusongkou port to ensure the safety of other ships and boats in the Yangtze and Huangpu rivers.

The waterway for cruise liners has been closed temporarily at the Wusongkou port due to the accident, the Baoshan District government said.

Two cruise ships, the Quantum of the Seas and the Costa Serena that were scheduled to berth at the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal this morning had to anchor about 2 kilometers away.

Some 13,000 passengers are scheduled to arrive or leave the terminal with the cruise liners today. The terminal has been organizing the stranded passengers to rest and wait for the reopening of the waterway, the district government said.

Other passengers are suggested to wait for updated information before heading to the terminal.

All the dropping containers are expected to be removed today, the administration said.
